Sophisticated testing equipment made the microbiology laboratory an essential part of the manufacturer's operation. Grid instability was disrupting its effective operation, creating a need for a standby-power arrangement.

Keeping a manufacturing laboratory connected
Short-run UPS protection and a generator layer for a South African complementary-medicine manufacturer's microbiology laboratory.
Published project account · 23 August 2021
Powermode's published account describes a short-run UPS solution for each business-critical piece of equipment, supported by a generator carrying the laboratory's full load. The 60kVA generator was installed on the roof of the three-storey building under Powermode's guidance.
The design separated two requirements: immediate continuity at critical equipment and sustained supply to the laboratory. The UPS layer was intended to bridge the transition while the generator took over.
For a comparable laboratory, begin by mapping each instrument's power requirement and interruption tolerance. Then coordinate UPS protection, backup generation and a safe recovery sequence with the facility's electrical team. This design principle is transferable; the equipment specification is not.
The public account does not state the client name, UPS models, battery chemistry, measured runtime or quantified downtime savings. Those details are not inferred here.
