Standby: basic interruption backup
Standby systems normally feed the equipment from utility power and switch to battery-backed output when the input leaves acceptable limits. They can suit less critical loads that tolerate the specified transfer interval.
Check the exact transfer time, waveform, surge protection and load compatibility. A battery-backed socket is not the same as continuous power conditioning, and a low initial cost should not determine the choice for sensitive operational equipment.
Line-interactive: regulation plus backup
Line-interactive designs can correct some input voltage variations using voltage regulation, reducing the need to discharge batteries for every moderate fluctuation. They still have model-specific limits and transfer behaviour.
This can be appropriate for selected business electronics where the input conditions and equipment tolerance are understood. It should not be assumed equivalent to online protection simply because the unit includes automatic voltage regulation.
Online: continuous double conversion
In normal double-conversion mode, incoming AC is converted to DC and then back to controlled AC output. The battery can support the DC stage when utility power is lost, avoiding an input-to-battery transfer break at the load.
The distinction is mode-specific. Maintenance bypass, static bypass and economy modes may change the protection available. A design review should explain those modes and confirm which one is used for the critical load.
Buy the protection the operation requires
Server infrastructure, sensitive controls and sites with challenging power quality often call for online UPS evaluation. Powermode's Q-on online ranges should be matched to the measured load, phase, environmental limits and runtime target.
Ask how the system behaves during an outage, overload, UPS fault and maintenance event. The battery configuration, monitoring and service arrangements complete the protection strategy; topology alone does not guarantee continuity.
| Topology | Normal supply path | Battery transition |
|---|---|---|
| Standby | Utility-fed | Switching interval |
| Line-interactive | Utility with voltage regulation | Model-specific switching interval |
| Online double conversion | Rectifier and inverter | No break in normal online mode |
Planning guidance, not an installation specification. Final sizing, compatibility and safe work procedures require a site-specific assessment and the relevant manufacturer's instructions.
