Begin with the duty cycle
A battery reserved for occasional short outages has a different job from a bank repeatedly discharged for hours. Record how often interruptions occur, their duration and the time available for recharge.
Lead-acid performance is sensitive to discharge rate, temperature, depth of discharge and ageing. Lithium-ion performance also depends on operating limits and management. Neither chemistry should be selected from an advertised cycle number without its test conditions.
Compare usable energy and physical requirements
Nominal kWh does not describe all the energy that can be delivered to the protected AC load. Reserve settings, discharge limits, conversion losses and battery condition affect usable runtime.
Higher energy density may reduce the footprint of a lithium-ion arrangement, but the final installation still needs service clearances, suitable protection and environmental control. A compact cabinet is not permission to ignore its installation instructions.
Compatibility is a system-level decision
A change of chemistry can require different voltage windows, charging profiles, current limits, protection and communications. The battery-management system must be integrated appropriately; it is not an optional detail.
Powermode offers Freedom Won lithium-ion options alongside lead-acid products. A listed battery is not automatically compatible with an existing UPS. Confirm the exact model, DC architecture, approved combination and warranty requirements before conversion.
Use a realistic ownership comparison
Include the initial battery and integration cost, expected replacement schedule, maintenance, installation labour, disposal and the operational cost of service windows. Use stated assumptions for life, temperature and cycling rather than optimistic headline values.
The outcome may favour lithium for a frequently cycled or space-constrained installation and lead-acid for another application. Powermode can help compare alternatives using one load, one autonomy requirement and one service expectation.
| Factor | Lead-acid assessment | Lithium-ion assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Duty cycle | Discharge depth and rate | Cycle conditions and BMS limits |
| Recharge | Charger output and recovery time | Charger/BMS compatibility and limits |
| Lifecycle | Replacement labour and frequency | Integration, support and warranty terms |
| Installation | Ventilation, weight and access | Protection, temperature and access |
Planning guidance, not an installation specification. Final sizing, compatibility and safe work procedures require a site-specific assessment and the relevant manufacturer's instructions.
